002: Fisherman couple
When I was in Porto at the turn of the millennium, it was not hard to reach the mouth of the Douro River, which meets the Atlantic Ocean:: Foz do Douro. There was an electrical tram that went until several hundred meters from the Atlantic coast. I was accompanied by a friend, and we walked for some time on the quays along the river. We observed some local people, mostly families of fishermen, who were enjoying their leisure time with playing chess, chatting, or just staring at the river. Some fishermen were watching their fishing rods, others were active with their boats, fishing gear, or with cleaning and repairing the nets. It was November, sunny and quite warm, compared to normal autumn temperatures. The sun was shining faintly. In the picture is an older couple who sat on the quays; they were apparently watching the river mouth in front of them.

274: Three on a bike
A bus trip in Brazil can be tiresome. Especially when you have to travel very long distances. In that respect, taking the plane is a better, but a much more expensive alternative. The hours seem to take longer on the bus when you drive in the dark. But during the day, you will notice that the time seems to go faster. You can enjoy the colorful and varied landscape for many hours, having a privileged look at the daily life along the highway. Especially when the bus has to go through villages and small towns, there is a lot to see. Like that time when my eye caught these three boys on a bike in an unknown village in the state of Pernambuco.

228: Homeless man
JANUARY 2009: Homeless man
In January 2009, I visited the cozy historical town of Olinda. Olinda played an important role in the Dutch occupation of Brazil, but nothing remains of the Dutch period in Olinda, because the city was burned by the Dutch. The results of reconstruction by the Portuguese are well admired; you can take long walks in the hilly old town, on the slippery cobblestones. You will see dozens of historic houses are plastered in bright colors. At the end of a tiring day, I met a group of my fellow travelers, who were waiting for our bus that would take us back to Recife, where we had our accommodation. A man with a distinctive turban and a large gray garbage bag walked towards us. One of our travelers had turned on a radio and others began to dance on the rhythm of Brazilian popular music. Spontaneously this homeless man joined them and danced with much joy. He sang too, and appeared to be happy to dance away his sorrows.

198. Children along the highway
JULY 2008: Children along the highway
It’s no secret that there is much poverty in the large northeastern region of Brazil. There have recently been intense attempts by the federal government to eradicate absolute poverty of the regional population, with visible results. Nonetheless, poverty is still clearly visible there, even to the eyes of tourists and travelers who use the highways. At some locations, houses and huts have been built not far from the highway, and the local people seem to be undisturbed about the speeding fast traffic. A few people try to take advantage of the raised bumps at the city limits, and then try to sell vegetables, fruit, sweets or handicraft to drivers and passengers. Children also seem to have grown up with life along the highway. These children enthusiastically waved to us when our bus passed by their little house.
