028: Train at Central Station
When I was in the Netherlands in 2010, I regularly made use of public transport: trains, buses, and trams. I made long train trips from Breda to Amsterdam, Nijmegen, Rotterdam, The Hague, and even Groningen. When I was a student, I had the privilege to travel for free. No wonder that I had spent many hours on the train, on the bus, or on the tram. To visit the Dutch cities that I hadn’t visited before, to meet friends living in other cities, to go to the beach. Now I had planned some day trips to Amsterdam and The Hague. In The Hague, I was on the platform, wairing ofrm e train to Breda. I was about to enter this so-called intercity train.

358: Praça da Estação
Praça Rui Barbosa, as it is named offically (after the Bahian politician), is one of the principal locations in Belo Horizonte. The cornerstone of this square was laid in 1894, even before the inauguration of the new capital of Minas Gerais. Ten years later, the square was urbanized, surrounded by English-style gardens. The neoclassic building of the railway station was inaugurated in 1922, and now hosts the Museu de Artes e Ofícios (Arts and Crafts Museum). Centrally located in this square is the monument of the Mineiro Civilization. Early 2000’s, the square became revitalized with new pavement, illumination and two large fountain blocks. The square hosts various festivals and cultural events, including the Arraial de Belô, a folkloric dance event held in June.

018: Warming hands
It was quite cold in the final week of February and in the first week of March, when I visited The Netherlands for the first time since my arrival in Brazil six years earlier. For me, it was quite a thermal shock to leave Brazil in summer – with temperatures above thirty degrees – and to arrive in The Netherlands (slightly more than one day later) in winter – with temperatures well below zero. I was used to sunny days, despite the rain season, and it was hard for me to cope with heavily clouded, sunless days with ice-cold rain showers. Therefore, I was wearing several shirts and sweaters, and a thick winter coat. Some people immediately considered me as a stranger, and started to try speaking English to me. On the railway station in Nijmegen, there was one favorite spot for me: the infra-red poles, where people could warm their hands. This was really useful for me!

DECEMBER 2007: Railway Station
The former railway station – now a museum – in Belo Horizonte had been renovated some years ago and now has become one of the main touristic sightings in the city. The station is flanked by the Museum of Crafts and Handicrafts, which hosts an elaborate collection of many professions from the past. The big square in front is an ideal location for cultural festivals and live performances by locally and widely famous artists. Two groups of fountains spray their water columns in the air, at certain times. They are illuminated at night, and visible form a great distance. A couple of weeks before Christmas, the railway building gained bright red, yellow, green, blue, and purple illumination. The main building and its wings and columns were lit with different colors. These color combinations were rotating constantly. The result was a colorful collection of lights, shown in a harmonized way. As if you had arrived at a station that only exists in a fairy tale!
