256: Biggest cashew tree
When we stayed in Joao Pessoa – capital of Paraíba state -, we made a trip to the neighboring state of Rio Grande do Norte. On the way to its capital -Natal -, the guide led us to Pirangi, where the largest cashew tree in the world is located. The tree was planted in 1888, and now measures more than 8500 square meters, with a circumference of 500 meters. The tree produces seventy to eighty cashew fruits. The exceptionally buoyant growth is due to genetic defects,;the tree still continues to grow and expand in size. The field is publicly accessible, but visitors should definitely not climb in the tree or even stand on a branch. It was an impressive sight, the tangle of meandering branches.
