359: ZOO aquarium
The Zoo in Belo Horizonte, located at Lake Pampulha, attracts many visitors. They admire the gorillas, monkeys, elephants, giraffes, lions, and many more. Since 2010, they also can visit another part that is focused on freshwater marine life, which represent part of the São Francisco River, Brazil’s third largest river. The river, nicknamed ‘Velho Chico (‘Old Frank’)’, originates from a spring in the state of Minas Gerais and ends in the Atlantic Ocean at the border between the states of Alagoas and Sergipe. The river is heavily polluted, and big efforts are made to clean that mess. Gradually, the river becomes indeed cleaner. One of the Zoo aquariums is filled with 450 thousand liters of water, and hosts a number of fish. The fish in the picture is swimming in that giant fish tank, called ‘São Francisco tank’.

003: Fisherman in his boat
The almost nine hundred km-long Douro river is the third largest on the Iberian Peninsula. The Douro Valley is famous for its vineyards, and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site List, as well as the Historic Center of Porto is. The valley provide excellent conditions for the cultivation of almonds, olives, and especially grapes. The grapes are essential for the world famous Port wines, which are stored and traded in Vila Nova de Gaia, that is located at the margin of the Douro River, opposite to the city of Porto. Not only wine production is important in Porto. Along the Douro River, there are many small and somewhat larger fishing boats. The fisherman in the picture is checking his fishing rod and nets. The name of his boat is not very surprising: ‘Douro’.

015: Misty Waalkade
When I was in Nijmegen in March 2010, for my final preparations prior to my PhD defense, the very cold days started with heavy mist. Despite being a native Dutch, it was very hard for me to stand the cold. I wore several layers of shirts and sweaters under my winter coat. It was only one week earlier that I was enjoying tropical summer days in Brazil. But this giant thermal shock didn’t stop me from walking around in Nijmegen on such a wintry day. The sunlight was very weak and had big trouble to dissolve the mist clouds. Especially along the Waalkade, the quays along the Waal River, where it was impossible to see the other side of the river. Even de water surface was covered with thin layers of mist clouds.

252: Red river
Minas Gerais hosts a wide variety of breathtaking landscapes. The north and west are dominated by dry savanna-like plateaus, while in the south and east a tropical mountain climate predominates. The mountains in the latter regions are intersected by numerous rivers, creeks and streams. One of the largest rivers in the country, the São Francisco River, originates in the mountains of Minas, and flows into the Atlantic Ocean about three thousand kilometers away. In the wet summer time, abundant rain showers could transform the streams and brooks into raging rivers. The withered landscape, caused by a long dry period in winter, changes into a fresh green composition. The reddish brown rising rivers are stained by the iron-rich sand they carry along. During a dry interval, the river appears to be calm, like a mirror, as shown in the picture.

AUGUST 2009: Water reflection
During my stay in Maceió in August 2009, I didn’t restrict myself to the city limits, but I also made some trips by bus. Two of these trips were provided by the tour company, while I was on my own in the other trips. It was not really difficult, I only had to request some information at the hotel and at the bus station for the necessary bus schedules and bus stops. I took the bus to various beaches at some distance from the capital, like Ipioca and Sonho Verde. During the bus ride, I kept the camera on my lap, and I shot several pictures of the varied landscape. A hilly, green landscape with coconut plantations, sugarcane plantations, and grasslands; often the landscape was intersected by rivers or streams, like here on the photo. On this semi-cloudy day, the clouds were sharply reflected in the almost stagnant river water.
