163. Winding Road

JULY 2008: Winding Road
In January 2008 I was invited to accompany a large group of students on their way to a meeting in Fortaleza, capital of Ceará. From Belo Horizonte, we traveled by bus, and made our first stop in Porto de Galinhas, a beach paradise in the state of Pernambuco. Subsequently, we also stopped at Praia da Pipa (Rio Grande do Norte), and at Canoa Quebrada (Ceará), before we finally arrived in Fortaleza, after having traveled by bus for five days. On the way, I enjoyed beautiful views of the mountain landscapes in Minas Gerais and southern Bahia, the barren landscapes across Bahia, and the lush green landscapes along the coasts in the northeast of the country. Especially the vast sugarcane fields attracted my attention. The fresh green was a nice contrast with the blue and white of a slightly cloudy sky, and the light brown color of meandering paths through the cane fields. I imagine how it would have been there in the cane fields during the short-lived Dutch occupation of northeastern Brazil, nearly four hundred years ago.
