334: Pile of beer bottles
Sabará is a historic town about 25 km from Belo Horizonte. It is easy to reach by bus, and it is not difficult to imagine that the town receives a lot of visitors from Belo Horizonte, especially during the weekend. Most visitors like to walk in the hilly historic core, where there are a number of beautiful churches, with characteristic features of the baroque and rococo style. Others will visit local restaurants, cafes and ice-cream parlors for their refreshments. But Sabará is not just for tourists. When I was invited on a Saturday to go to a country-house in Sabará, I haven’t seen anything of the historic city center. The cottage was high on a hill, and there was a swimming pool where the guests were cooling down on this hot summer day. Barbecue and especially bottles of beer completed the entertainment on this day, just watch the large number of 600 ml bottles of beer in a forgotten corner.

284: World Cup Art
When I was in the historic town of Sabará on a Sunday, my eye caught this street art. Observing the material next to it, that drawing was still underway to complete. The leopard represented the mascot of the Soccer World Cup in South Africa, to which the Brazilian team would participate. As known, that participation was not particularly successful: the Divine Canaries were defeated by the Orange Lions, the Dutch squad that would later reach the finals. At the time of the photo, many Brazilians still had hope for their sixth Cup, the Hexa.

281: Church towers
Minas Gerais has a number of very interesting historic towns in the vicinity of Belo Horizonte. These are Diamantina, Tiradentes, Sao João del Rei, Congonhas, Mariana, Ouro Preto, and Sabará. The latter is only 25 km away from the capital, and is easy to reach by bus. You need good hiking shoes for the cobbled roads over the sometimes steep hills. One of the nearest churches in the center is the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo. This baroque and rococo church was built at the end of the eighteenth century. Some important works by artist Aleijadinho can be found in this church.

257: Red roof and chimney
Sabará is a historic town at about fifteen kilometers from Belo Horizonte. The historical center hosts many monuments and churches, which count on a lot of tourists. The many festivals held in Sabará also attract many visitors. It is a pleasure to put your feet on the colossal cobblestones, which are worn over the centuries by our predecessors and by natural erosion. On weekdays, it is remarkably quiet; you can freely walk around and explore the extensive historic center. This time my eye did’t catch an ancient monument, but a house of more recent date: particularly the red roof and stone chimney, forming a wonderful contrast to the clear blue sky.
