017: Santuário de Santa Luzia
A tough climb of 660 steps leads to the Saint Lucia Sanctuary, a remarkable monument in Viana do Castelo. The sanctuary, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, appears to be built many centuries ago, but the truth is that the project dates back from 1899, by Miguel Ventura Terra. It was captain Luís de Andrade e Sousa who had prayed at the Santa Lucia chapel for healing his severe eye problem. As a gratitude he frequented, as a hermit, the chapel, and ordered the construction of a road to the top of the little chapel. Construction of the sanctuary was started in 1904, and completed in 1959. It has striking similarities with Sacre-Coeur in Paris; it was inspired by Byzantine architecture, with few gothic and romantic elements. From the top of the sanctuary, one of the most splendid views in the world can be witnessed: the Lima River in the east, the city of Viana in the south, and the rugged coastline and Atlantic Ocean in the west.

015: Nossa Senhora da Agonia
Viana do Castelo is a city at about 60 km north of Porto. It is said that the origin of the name Viana is nothing else than the exclamation ‘Vi a Ana’ (of the castle)!, which can be translated as: ‘I’ve seen Ana, of the castle!’, referring to a beautiful but very timid blonde princess that lived in the castle. Viana is also a fishermen’s port: the fishermen’s patron saint is Nossa Senhora da Agonia, also known as Nossa Senhora das Dores, which can be translated as: Our Lady of Sorrows. The patron saint’s feastdays are on 18, 19, and 20 August.

203. Twelve prophets
AUGUST 2009: Twelve prophets
Minas Gerais host some very interesting historic towns: Ouro Preto, Mariana, Diamantina, Tiradentes, Sabara, Sao Joao del Rei and Congonhas. Congonhas, located on the historic route “Estrada Real” between Diamantina and Rio de Janeiro, famous for the sanctuary (Basilica) of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos, the statues of twelve prophets, and six chapels with seven performances of the Cross. The sanctuary included in The UNESCO World Heritage List. The prophets – Isaiah, Jeremiah, Baruch, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Obadiah, Amos, Jonah, Nahum and Habakkuk – and the Cross were carved in Baroque style by master sculptor Aleijadinho. The soapstone statues of the prophets are quite affected through the test of time; how would these statues have looked like at the beginning of the eighteenth century, when they just had been carved?

Salvador, capital of the state of Bahia, and former capital of Brazil, is very popular among (foreign) tourists. Salvador hosts a large number of churches and sanctuaries. One sanctuary is ‘Senhor do Bonfim’, located outside the center. But tourists will gain colorful ribbons in the center of Salvador, usually fastened on the left wrist with three knots, by the local people on the streets. You may make your wishes at the time of receiving these ribbons . The ribbons need to be kept on the wrist until they fell off with time.
The original picture was taken in July 2007.
