045: Op schoot
Poem by Arjen van der Linden (in Dutch):
‘Op schoot
Als er geen stoelen
Of banken zouden zijn
Bezaten we de grond
Bij de bessen
En de wortels
En de wandelende tak
Geeft maker Visch
Zich bloot met beeld
Op schoot
De voorhoofdman
Het brein gehelmd
Een strakke blik
Mikt op dat
Wat komen gaat
En rust op
Zijn gespierde dijen
Het liefste links erop
En er dan weer afglijen
Net naast de kei
Mag hij je lokken
Eerst de schoot
Dan de stad
Kroeg of koopgoot
Na afloop weer ‘n
Keer die dijenschoot
Om ruim voldaan
Op thuis te gaan
Zijn het de armen
Beschermend gespreid
Die beeldend zeggen
Dat jij ja Jij
Stadsvader zijt’

016: Monumento a Viana do Castelo
When are at the port of the city of Viana do Castelo, your eyes will immediately meet the shiny statue of a bare-breasted woman, apparently moving against a fierce wind, who holds a ship in her left hand, and a flower in her right hand, symbolizing protection of the sailors and welcoming them who go past her, respectively. The statue, in bronze and five meters high, was made by Manuel Rocha,. It was inaugurated on 5 October 1999, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Viana do Castelo. A legend circulates in which a young men was so deeply in love with a beautiful girl named Ana, that he enthousiastically repeated that he had seen het again: Vi a Ana! This became Viana, according to the legend. Through the names Viana de Riba do Minho, Viana do Lima, Viana de Caminha, Viana da Foz do Lima, the city eventually was named Viana do Castelo.

373: Upright marlin statue
When you are at Morro Beach in Guarapari, you can hardly miss the giant statue of an upright blue marlin. This statue, created by Italian artist Juliano Filippi in 1998, commerorates the catch of the biggest blue marlin in Guarapari in 1992. The lucky fisherman was Paulo Armorim, who needed the help of 28 people to have the 636 kg and 4,62 m long blue marlin out of the water. He gained much fame worldwide, and had many people arriving to fish with him. Paulo died after a road accident in 2006. The marlin statue is a bit taller than the fish itself, about eight meters.

017 : Zittend Kind Statue
When I went to work or to my room from the center of Nijmegen by bike, I always passed this little stone boy. The boy, in a squatting pose, is staring in front of him and seems to be lost in deep thoughts. But you expect that he suddenly may look at you or even jump up. When I walked the Four Days Marches, I walked along this statue, and I regarded him as a silent, unmoved supporter of us walkers. This artwork was made in 1969 by the famous Nijmegen artist Ed van Teeseling. It was recently included in a fourteen kilometer long bicycle route along fifteen Van Teeseling’s art pieces.

322: Guaycuru warrior statue
Campo Grande, capital of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, has an interesting park within the municipal boundaries: Parque das Nações Indígenas, park of the indigenous tribes. One of the most striking elements in this park is a seven meter high statue of an indigenous rider on a prancing horse. This Guaycuru tribe warrior has a spear in hand. He is not on the horse, but strangely he hangs on one horse flank. The Guayacuru warriors were active in a large part of central South America, and were known as very aggressive and barbaric. They lived in hunting and fighting. The Guaycuru offered a brave resistance against the Portuguese. The original tribe became eventually extinct, but related tribes are now also considered as Guaycuru.

315: JK Statue
Undoubtedly the best-known resident of Diamantina, a historic mining town in the heart of Minas Gerais, was former President Juscelino Kubitschek. Born just after the turn of the century, in 1902, and moved at a young age.to the young capital Belo Horizonte where he worked as a doctor. Soon, Juscelino began his political career; ten years later he became Mayor of Belo Horizonte. One of his legacies is the architectural complex of Pampulha, designed by Niemeyer. His career continued as Governor of Minas Gerais, and in 1955 he was installed as President of Brazil. He opposed the military dictatorship, and was even imprisoned for a short while. In 1976, Juscelino died in an obscure car accident. His statue is in a prominent place in Diamantina.
