281: Church towers
Minas Gerais has a number of very interesting historic towns in the vicinity of Belo Horizonte. These are Diamantina, Tiradentes, Sao João del Rei, Congonhas, Mariana, Ouro Preto, and Sabará. The latter is only 25 km away from the capital, and is easy to reach by bus. You need good hiking shoes for the cobbled roads over the sometimes steep hills. One of the nearest churches in the center is the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo. This baroque and rococo church was built at the end of the eighteenth century. Some important works by artist Aleijadinho can be found in this church.
