020: Black-suited woman

Like many major cities in the world, Amsterdam has also to deal with rush hours and traffic jams. It’s quite frustrating to spend several hours every day commuting from your home, just outside the big city (what many Dutch prefer), to your office in the city. Therefore, many people take public transportation like the subway, bus or train. Others prefer to be more independent on public transport and choose for the bicycle, motorcycle, or scooter. Like the woman in this photograph. Despite the fact it was a cold day in March, with the temperature floating around seven degrees centigrade only, she sat there on her white scooter in her black uniform. It was as if she were a policewoman from some decades ago. It was no wonder that she caught some attention from bystanders, even in Amsterdam, where you may observe many people that will draw your attention.

207. Clown

JANUARY 2009: Clown

It is sad that more than more than forty thousand fatalities are counted annually in the Brazilian traffic. Some measures have been improved to improve road safety in Brazil, but it’s not sufficient and effective . Alcohol and mobile phone use are still major causes of fatal accidents. Therefore, initiatives at local level emerge to reduce the high number of casualties. When I was in Olinda in January 2009, I noticed this funny clown. He was hired by the city of Olinda to make passersby aware, in a playful way, of their traffic behavior and how to behave properly in traffic.

079. Fresh air 

SEPTEMBER 2006: Fresh air

In Belo Horizonte, it is getting quite warm in September. The warm sun slowly pushes away the winter cold, the nights are becoming warmer. During the day, tropical temperatures may be reached again. The six-month rainy season is about to start approximately late September. September is considered as an ideal month for traveling in Brazil: the rainy season in the Northeast is almost over, the rainy season hasn’t started yet in the Southeast, and it is no longer that cold as it was in June or July, in the Southeast. There is one national holiday in September: Independence Day on 7 September. In 1822, Portuguese crown prince Pedro proclaimed Brazil’s independence, and was crowned as the first Brazilian emperor. For many Brazilians, this holiday is a good opportunity for a short trip. They go to nearby nature reserves, to their country houses (sítios in Portuguese). The entire family, and also their pets, travels by car to these destinations. This poor dog was no longer able to keep its patience, and managed to direct his snout in fresh air, while seated in the car.
