002: Amtrak train
In May 1999, I stayed in San Diego for a scientific congress, which lasted ten days. An unforgettable experience to meet principal scientists of my research area, from all over the world. I had two days left to explore more of San Diego, and then it was about time to travel to Los Angeles, where I was to meet my friend from the Netherlands, who would join me on our two-week travel through the national parks in South-West USA. My first intention was to catch a plane, but a last-minute travel was very expensive. A better alternative was the train. It was a very comfortable journey, which lasted less than three hours.

AUGUST 2007: Vale do Rio Doce
The almost 600 km long railway between Belo Horizonte and Vitória follows a great part of the course of Doce River towards the state of Espírito Santo. The railroad company is called after the valley, which is the river’s basin: Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD). Since 2007, the company has been renamed into Vale. Vale is one of Brazil’s largest companies and one of the world’s largest mining companies. The company possesses a thirty-year-concession of the railway, and is mainly used for the transport of iron ore, while transport of people has less priority. The passenger train moves on slowly, at an overall average speed of only 50 km per hour, and stops regularly for allowing long iron ore trains passing by. Sometimes a train with almost two hundred wagons! It is no surprise that the train travel to Vitória takes almost thirteen hours, and that there is only one train per day leaving in each direction. It was almost dark when the train entered the state of Espírito Santo. The sun was already setting, towards the horizon. The colorful sunset was reflected on the shiny metal sheets of the train wagon.

JANUARY 2006: Rio Doce
The railroad between Belo Horizonte and Vitória mainly follows the margins of Rio Doce (‘Sweet River’). The basin of this 853 km long river is twice the size of the Netherlands. In winter, during the dry season, this river is no more than a little stream. However, in summer, during the rainy season, the river is very wide and causes many inundations. On quiet days, the train traveler may enjoy the breathtaking river landscapes. The water looks like a giant mirror, in which the clouds and the sky are reflected. The big variety in landscapes of mountains and rivers gives you the idea that the train journey is not that long. One remark: due to the stained glass in the first class carriage, this picture is more bluish.

DECEMBER 2005: Railway
Brazil doesn’t have an elaborate railway system. There are only a few active railways, mainly in the south and southeast. This situation eventually will change in the coming decades, because the Brazilian government is planning to invest huge sums of money in the expansion and modernization of the railways. One of the active railways is the connection between the cities of Belo Horizonte and Vitória. A journey of almost 600 km, which takes about thirteen hours. Yes, thirteen hours! And only once a day, the train departs early in the morning. The train has to stop many times, in order to give way to a constant stream of freight trains. This railway has a branch to Itabira, this railroad follows the slopes of the mountains. Despite the long journey, it is very interesting to watch breathtaking landscapes.
