Imaging Brazil 075: Lorry in Bahia, BA (2006)

075. In between 

JULY 2006: In between

During the very long – more than 24 hours! – bus ride from Belo Horizonte to Salvador, I was staring out of the window most of the time. I kept my eyes open, and had my camera ready. For hours even, with sometimes minor interruptions, when I was dozing. Quite a number of rechargeable batteries were consumed by the camera; sometimes, I had to switch of the camera when it was getting too hot. The landscape in both Minas Gerais and Bahia was breathtaking, and seemed to alter every kilometer. I took hundreds of pictures that day. It was not easy to take them, since I had to take care of the focus on the subject and composition, and on details. The landscape was like an accelerated movie that was passing along you. I had to act quickly, in order to obtain some good shots. I was acting even faster, when a truck was passing the bus. I managed to photograph an open space between the truck and the trailer. I have to admit that this picture was some kind of a lucky shot.

Imaging Brazil 049: Mining Truck in Itabira, MG (2005)

049. Dinky toy 

DECEMBER 2005: Dinky toy

At first, you might think that this picture has been photoshopped. But this picture is real. The picture was taken in Itabira, a city at about 100 km from Belo Horizonte. At the city limits, mining companies exploit iron ore. Complete mountains are being scraped off by huge machines. The iron ore is destined for emerging markets, mainly China. Huge machines scrape, break, and transport tons of iron ore-containing rocks. Iron ore is then transported, 600 km away, by train to the port of Vitória, in the state of Espírito Santo. The normal-sized land cruiser is a good reference for the huge size of such iron ore transport trucks.
