380: Pigeons bathing

When I was living in Belo Horizonte, most of the residences where I stayed were pretty close to the campus of the Federal University. During the weekends, I stayed in the campus for some hours. I enjoyed many walks along the various faculties that are spread over the vast campus area. Most of the area is forested, and many locations have restricted access. However, you can still see many savage and domesticated animals. One day, I suddenly met a giant lizard, a teiju, of which is told that it can act very aggressive. I also have observed many little monkeys there, playing with each other, high in the trees. And many pigeons, like this pigeon couple that had been taking a bath together, and were taking some rest until their wet feathers have dried. They remained unmoved when I approached them silently: they were really used to humans in their presence.

319: View from Casa da Glória

Diamantina is a historic mining town at about three hundred kilometers from Belo Horizonte. Although the lion’s share of the Federal University of the state of Minas Gerais is in the capitals Pampulha Campus, some small institutes are located in other cities. Among them is the Institute of Geological Sciences (Instituto Casa da Glória). The site was built at the end of the eighteenth century, and was inhabited by Dona Josefa Maria da Glória. Eventually, it was inhabited by bishops, and by the religious order of Saint Vincent de Paul. When this order took possession of a house across the street, a wooden crossed walkway (‘passadiço’) was built between the two houses. The photo was taken from this walkway. The building also has housed a notorious orphanage and a girls’ school.

316: Tree silhouettes

The Pampulhacampus of the Federal University in Belo Horizonte (UFMG) is particularly large, more than five square kilometers. The faculties, schools and institutes are spread over the green, wooded area. Every day there are about fifty thousand people, equal to the population of a small town, in the campus. Due to the vastness it is sometimes lovely to walk along or through the green areas. Natural forest trails give you the sensation of being in a natural park, far away from the urban noise. In the small forests it is possible to meet small monkeys, or small and medium rodents, or even a large lizard. The picture was made near the main entrance, during a colorful sunset, with the tree branches turning black against a reddish purple sky.

309: Dark clouds over Economics Faculty

From 2005 to 2014, I was regularly found in the campus of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Belo Horizonte. I had my space at the Faculty of Biological Sciences, and I was a frequent visitor of the Faculty of Information Sciences. Since I was invited to join a student travel to Salvador in 2006, I have made many friends there, and have joined various gatherings and parties. I have played numerous matches of Braziliaan pool billiard (sinuca) in the early evening hours. The UFMG campus is really large, it more resembles a little town. Large faculty complexes are spread across the campus, only few faculties – among them the Faculty of Medicine –  remain outside this Pampulha Campus. One of the newer faculties is the Economics Faculty as seen on the photo. At that hour, really dark clouds hovered above bright colored complex.

023. Playfield

APRIL 2005: Playfield

The Federal University (UFMG) in Belo Horizonte is one of the largest in the country. The campus was built near Lake Pampulha, and borders the huge Mineirão soccer stadium. The university sports center, the CEU, is located at the other side of that stadium, separated by an avenue. This sports center is built on hilly terrain, and therefore has different height levels. Near the main entrance are the swimming pool near-Olympic size, changing rooms, a fitness center, and a sunbathing area. One level below, reached by stairs, are the playing fields for volleyball, basketball. Another level below is the football field surrounded by a running track. Many students will visit the sports center in the warmer months, and especially on weekends. They not only not only come there to do sports, but also for swimming, sunbathing and lounging in one of the many deck chairs. The picture shows a fragment of the basketball court.

Dark clouds over the UFMG Campus. In BELO HORIZONTE (MG)

Near the Pampulha Lake, next to the Mineirão Soccer Stadium, is the immense UFMG campus. The campus of the Federal University of the State of Minas Gerais. Almost all faculties are located inside this campus. One of the newest faculties is the Faculty of Economic Sciences, FACE in short. Last December (2011), during the raining season, dark clouds announced another heavy thunderstorm.
