027: View on a canal
Amsterdam is world famous for its canals. More than 100 km of canals are found in the center; no less than 1500 bridges connect the land and the almost 100 islands. In 2010, part of this canal area, the so-called Canal Belt, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The canal system is one of the early examples of urban planning. One of the main canals, the Singel, had a defensive purpose, whereas three other principal canals – Herengracht, Prinsengracht, and Keizersgracht – had residential purposes. The canals were used for water control and for transport. Even now, the canals are used for commercial boat trips, and for transportation of many products, including flowers and beer.

280: Palm tree reflection
In April 2010, I was invited to attend a family party in a country house in Pitangui, at 125 km from Belo Horizonte. A chartered bus took us to the party venue where lunch was waiting for us: the traditional feijoada, the Brazilian bean stew. In the afternoon, many guests entertained themselves in the pool, while I was accompanying a group to the village of Pitangui. The evening was filled with music and dance. The night was pretty cold; in the morning there was even ripening on grass leaves. The sun was already exuberant, the air warmed up quickly . The stationary pond water was an ideal mirror for the sunbathing palm trees.

273: Palm tree reflection
In the popular Mangabeiras Park in Belo Horizonte you can find countless interesting compositions. Natural compositions of plants, leaves, insects, birds in their native habitat. Green mountain slopes in the south against clear blue skies, or skies filled with a rich variety of cloud shapes; in the north the vast skyline of Belo Horizonte. Also attracts less advanced compositions, including water reflections, attracts my attention. The reflection of this palm tree in the pond water became one of my favorite photographs of that year.

265: Areia Vermelha
You will find a great variety of coasts and beaches along the very long Brazilian coastline. For example cliffs, sandstone shores, sandy beaches, beaches that disappear at high tide, sand banks. These sand banks are very popular among tourists; local boatmen try to have their profitable share. To a somewhat expensive rate they offer boat trips to the sand banks. However, at the larger and better known beach resorts, these boat trips are under the control of the municipality, and only licensed boats are allowed to transport tourists. As in Maragogi, Porto de Galinhas, and here in Joao Pessoa, where they offer boat trips to Areia Vermelha. At low tide, the ferry, with several dozen tourists, heads to the sandbank, and returns a few hours later, at the time when the sand disappears again, being taken by the water.
