JANUARY 2008: Flip Flops
In January 2008, I joined a group of students on their way to Fortaleza, by bus. A travel that lasted no less than five days. Our first stop was in Porto de Galinhas, in the state of Pernambuco, after having traveled thirty-six hours. Porto de Galinhas is one of the most famous beach resorts in Brazil. Many tourists admire the warm water temperature, the large beaches, the natural pools, the off-coast reefs, and the many cozy bars, restaurants and shops. We arrived there in the morning, and stayed there until the next morning. We slept on the bus that was parked near a pousada. The hot air and the many mosquitoes kept us awake all night. At day, some of us could not resist to stay in a bar and have a lot of beers and cachaça. However, most of us preferred to stay on the beach, to stretch and relax our bodies that have suffered a lot during the first stage of our bus travel. Since the start of the bus travel, I left my shoes on the bus and only used my blue flip flops until our return in Belo Horizonte, ten days and almost six thousand kilometers later.
