DECEMBER 2007: Fishing bird
You can think of various titles for this picture. This brown bird has a lot of patience for getting his daily meal. When looking in this rubbish, you need to possess sharp eyes to discover a tiny fish swimming in it. When observing the green on his beak, he already had tried various times to catch such a fish. The location is close to some drain pipes that connect a small current to Pampulha Lake in Belo Horizonte. In 2006, the city performed an elaborate and costly cleaning operation, but as long as water supply still contains waste materials, this bird had no other choice than to continue catching fish in the rubbish. Fortunately, there are organizations that make great efforts to have the dirty lake clean again. For instance, the university-based Projeto Manuelzão, a project for the communities along Rio das Velas in Minas Gerais. This organization constantly tries to convince politicians and the society to become aware of the environmental pollution and to urge them to find long-term solutions.
